Acupuncture

and traditional chinese medicine

Acupuncture originated from China thousands of years ago. Acupuncturists use needles penetrating the skin to stimulate certain points on the body, to alleviate pain or to help treat various health conditions.

According to traditional Chinese medicine theory, the body has an energy force called chi. If the flow of qi is insufficient, imbalanced, or interrupted, diseases occur. Acupuncture stimulates acu-points to release and regulate this qi, which cure illnesses.

Numerous recent studies conducted by scientists have found that acupuncture is effective in treating pain. One major hypothesis is that acupuncture works through neuro-hormonal pathways. That is to say that acupuncture can stimulate the brain to release neural hormones that increase the pain threshold and alleviate pain. Another hypothesis is that acupuncture works by reducing pro-inflammatory markers, or proteins in the body.
